How Powerball Works

Powerball is the most widely available lottery game in the United States — the only one of the two national games also sold in Puerto Rico — and the one that has produced the largest jackpot on record. It has drawn three times a week since a Monday drawing was added on August 23, 2021; the archive shows the jump from 105 draws a year to 156.

Each drawing takes five white balls from a drum numbered 1 to 69 and one red Powerball from a second drum numbered 1 to 26. The two drums are independent, so the same number can come up as a white ball and as the Powerball in one drawing. This 5/69 + 1/26 matrix has been in place since October 7, 2015, which means every draw in our archive was made under the same rules.

The red Powerball is not a "bonus" in the UK sense — it is part of the jackpot combination, and matching it on its own already wins the lowest prize. Power Play, the optional multiplier on non-jackpot prizes, is drawn separately and is not part of the data we collect.

Powerball is run by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL), on behalf of the lotteries of 45 US states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Format changes that matter here

  • 2015 Matrix changed to 5 of 69 + 1 of 26 (from 5 of 59 + 1 of 35). Our archive begins after this, in January 2016.
  • 2021 Monday drawings begin on August 23, 2021 — three drawings a week from then on.

Checking a Powerball ticket

  • White balls can match in any order; the Powerball only counts if it matches the red ball.
  • A ticket that matches the Powerball and nothing else still wins a prize, so a "blank" line is worth checking twice.
  • If you played Power Play, the multiplier is announced with the drawing but is not shown here — confirm it with your state lottery.
  • Prizes are claimed in the state where the ticket was bought, under that state's rules and deadlines.

Where these results come from

Draws from January 2016 to June 10, 2026 were imported from the New York State Gaming Commission's public Powerball dataset on data.ny.gov (New York is a Powerball member lottery). From June 13, 2026 each drawing is read from powerball.com, the game's official site. Jackpot amounts are only published there for recent drawings, so older rows carry none.

Every draw passes the same checks before it is stored — the right count of numbers, each inside the game's range, no repeated main number, a plausible date — and a failed check skips the draw rather than guessing. Full data sources and methodology →
