How Mega Millions Works
Mega Millions is Powerball's direct rival and has been rebuilt twice inside our archive — which is why its statistics pages treat the Mega Ball with more care than any other pool on the site.
Five white balls are drawn from 1 to 70 and one gold Mega Ball from a separate drum. Since April 8, 2025 that second drum holds 24 balls; before that it held 25 (from October 2017) and 15 (before October 2017). The white-ball drum shrank from 75 to 70 in the same October 2017 overhaul.
The Mega Ball is part of the jackpot combination, like Powerball's red ball. Tickets bought since the April 2025 change include a multiplier on non-jackpot prizes; it is not part of the draw data we collect, so check it on your ticket or with your lottery.
Mega Millions is run by a consortium of US state lotteries, and is sold in 45 states, Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands.

Format changes that matter here
- 2017 October 31, 2017: white balls 1–75 → 1–70, Mega Ball 1–15 → 1–25. White balls 71–75 were last drawn on October 20, 2017.
- 2025 April 8, 2025: Mega Ball 1–25 → 1–24 and a new ticket price with a built-in multiplier. Mega Ball 25 was last drawn on April 4, 2025.
Checking a Mega Millions ticket
- Match the five white balls in any order and the gold Mega Ball separately.
- Matching only the Mega Ball wins the lowest prize tier.
- For a ticket bought before April 2025, compare it with the draw of that date — the Mega Ball drum was different then.
- Prize tiers and any multiplier are set by the official game rules; confirm a win with your state lottery.
Where these results come from
Every draw is read from megamillions.com, the game's official site, through the same data endpoint its own results page uses. The site only publishes a jackpot figure for the latest drawing, so most rows carry none.
Every draw passes the same checks before it is stored — the right count of numbers, each inside the game's range, no repeated main number, a plausible date — and a failed check skips the draw rather than guessing. Full data sources and methodology →
