Does the Mega Millions Draw Look Random?
A fair draw does not give every number the same count — it gives counts that wobble around an expected value by a predictable amount. This is that check, for each Mega Millions pool.
Mega Millions specifically: Three different Mega Ball drums appear in this archive — 15, 25 and now 24 balls — so the Mega Ball test only uses draws since April 2025. That is a small sample: each Mega Ball has been expected only a handful of times, so treat Mega Ball rankings as description, not signal.
Over 934 draws since October 31, 2017, each of the 70 white balls should come up about 66.7 times, give or take 7.9. The real counts run from 53 (45, 51, 65 and 67) to 87 (10). 68 of the 70 numbers sit within two standard deviations of that expectation — in a random draw about 95% would — and a chi-square test across all of them gives p = 0.61.
The spread between the most- and least-drawn numbers is the size random chance routinely produces. It is not evidence that any number is favoured.
Mega Ball: 158 draws, expected 6.6 per number; p = 0.36. With only 158 draws under the current rules, each number is expected just 6.6 times, so these counts are too small to say anything about individual numbers yet.
