Mega Millions has changed its number pools and game format over time. Historical frequency data should therefore be interpreted in the context of the rules that applied during each period.

LotteryDataHub preserves historical draw data and applies the appropriate validation rules to the recorded drawings. That means the tables above still show numbers 71 to 75 and Mega Ball 25 with the draws they really had — but those numbers were retired and can no longer come up, so they are marked as retired in the tables and left out of the most and least frequent rankings.

Raw counts only mean something next to what chance predicts. Here are the extremes of the Mega Millions table, measured that way.

The most-drawn number

Since the October 2017 format change, number 10 came up in 87 of 934 draws — 9.31% of them, against 7.14% expected. That is 20.3 above its expected 66.7, or 2.6 standard deviations.

The least-drawn number

Since the October 2017 format change, number 45 came up in 53 of 934 draws — 5.67% of them, against 7.14% expected. That is 13.7 below its expected 66.7, or 1.7 standard deviations.

Mega Millions specifically: White balls 71 to 75 stay in the all-time table because they were drawable until October 2017; their counts simply stop there. Mega Balls 16 to 24 only joined in late 2017, so they have had fewer chances than 1 to 15 in all-time counts.

Standard deviation is the yardstick that makes these counts comparable. In a random draw about two thirds of numbers land within one standard deviation of the expected count and about 95% within two. For Mega Millions white balls over the current format: 50 of 70 are within one (about 48 expected) and 68 within two (about 67 expected).

Percentages are the fairer way to compare periods of different length — 12 months against 10 years, say — but they swing much more over short periods: over 100 draws, a single extra appearance moves a number by a full percentage point. That is why the short-period tables on this page can look dramatic while the all-time table looks flat.

The spread between the most- and least-drawn numbers is the size random chance routinely produces. It is not evidence that any number is favoured.
