Count, Percentage and Expected

Raw counts only mean something next to what chance predicts. Here are the extremes of the UK Lotto table, measured that way.

The most-drawn number

Number 42 came up in 132 of 1,125 draws — 11.73% of them, against 10.17% expected. That is 17.6 above its expected 114.4, or 1.7 standard deviations.

The least-drawn number

Number 21 came up in 94 of 1,125 draws — 8.36% of them, against 10.17% expected. That is 20.4 below its expected 114.4, or 2.0 standard deviations.

UK Lotto specifically: The Bonus Ball comes out of the same machine after the main six, so on a given night it can never repeat a main number. Its counts are a separate and much smaller table: one ball a draw instead of six.

Standard deviation is the yardstick that makes these counts comparable. In a random draw about two thirds of numbers land within one standard deviation of the expected count and about 95% within two. For UK Lotto main numbers over the current format: 42 of 59 are within one (about 40 expected) and 58 within two (about 56 expected).

Percentages are the fairer way to compare periods of different length — 12 months against 10 years, say — but they swing much more over short periods: over 100 draws, a single extra appearance moves a number by a full percentage point. That is why the short-period tables on this page can look dramatic while the all-time table looks flat.

The spread between the most- and least-drawn numbers is the size random chance routinely produces. It is not evidence that any number is favoured.
